How to send your CV to an employer

5 minute read · Updated 30 October 2026

A great CV still needs to reach the right person in the right way. Here is how to send it so it gets read.

Name your file properly

Use your name and the word CV, for example Alex Morgan CV.pdf. Avoid file names like "cv final final 2.pdf". Free CV Builder names your download this way automatically.

Sending your CV by email

Keep the email short and polite, use a clear subject line and attach your CV as a PDF.

SubjectApplication for Weekend Sales Assistant – Alex Morgan

EmailDear Ms Patel,

I would like to apply for the Weekend Sales Assistant role advertised in your shop window. I am a Year 12 student with experience serving customers at a local charity shop, and I am available every Saturday and Sunday.

I have attached my CV and would be happy to come in for a chat at any time.

Kind regards,
Alex Morgan

  • Use the manager's name if you know it. If not, "Dear Hiring Manager" is fine.
  • Send it from a sensible email address.
  • Check that the attachment is actually attached before you press send.

Handing in your CV in person

For shops, cafés, restaurants and other local businesses, handing in a printed CV can make a strong first impression.

  • Go at a quiet time. Mid-morning or mid-afternoon on a weekday is best. Avoid lunchtime and Saturdays.
  • Dress neatly, as if it were a short interview.
  • Ask for the manager and introduce yourself with a smile: "Hi, I'm Alex. I wondered if you're looking for any weekend staff?"
  • Take several copies in a folder so they stay flat and clean.

Applying through a website

Larger employers usually use online application forms. Upload your PDF where asked, and copy key details from your CV into the form carefully. A single-column CV style works best here, as explained in our UK CV rules guide.

Following up

If you have not heard back after about a week, it is fine to follow up once with a short, friendly email or a quick visit. Say you are still interested and ask whether they have had a chance to look at your CV.

Keep a list

Write down where you applied, the date and any reply. It helps you follow up at the right time and stops you applying twice to the same place.
